By now we all know about the earthquake that hit Haiti.
Thousands are dead...and thousands are without water, food and shelter.
My solution?
Princess Cruise Lines or Carnival needs to donate one of their large ships to motor on down to the Caribbean for all people to use. That way they are off the island and in a safe place. They will have water and shelter. And they're safe from after shocks.
And they have a place to stay until we can rebuild or help secure things again down there.
I like my plan.
It solves lots of problems...albeit slightly unconventially and at a huge cost to the cruise line...
but can you put a price on human life?
I think not.
Are you doing anything to help?

What a great idea! Wonder why no one else has thought of it?
Ingenius!!!! I am glad to say we have donated. Or else I would feel really guilty right about now.
Wanted to pop in and say hi as I saw your link on another's blog.
This seems like a great idea until you think about some numbers. The biggest cruise ship I've been on is the MS Zuiderdam which could handle 2200 passengers with 850 crew. Completely taking care of 2200 people kind of seems like a drop in the bucket with this kind of disaster. HOWEVER, if they tripled their crew and set up the cruise ship as a round the clock food and water production plant, ferrying food and water to shore, that would help more people pretty darn quick. If they didn't shelter anyone, but just provided hot food and clean water it might be more use to a greater number of people. (Also, the Haitian docks are rubble as well.) If the Haitians don't start getting at least water today, things are going to get very nasty, very fast.
Also, I really enjoy your blog and yours is one of only about 5 I read daily! Here's my URL

great idea!
we gave to the red cross - I heard they've raised millions so far.
that amount could probably pay for more than one cruise ship!
I like it! You should send an email to them with your awesome idea.
I think that is a GREAT idea:-)
I have to agree with His Wife, the cruise is a nice thought but if they were to set up to supply food water and other basic necessities it would help far more than putting these people on a cruise. Plus based on the new reports I have seen there are so many dead that they are making mass graves. There are those who were picking thru all of the dead bodies to find their loved ones so they could bury them in an individual grave on a mountain. I do think the cruise ship's main focus should be providing food and water but at the same time maybe a break for the thousands of volunteers. The docks may be destroyed but ferries could make this a possibility. Just a few thoughts. and yes if you have not donated please do so. The America Red Cross is probably the most reputible and trustworthy as far as a world wide recognized organization. If you have a local charity or church that is helping please donate to them as well.
Now what an incredible idea this is, Rhea! I wish something like that could happen, but ya know... big business blah blah blah.
Btw... don't ya love me anymore? You never come by.
Justine :o )
Great idea! Yes. I wrote a post today about donating to the relief effort today too. Prayers for the people of Haiti. And fuc* Rush Limbaugh!
The cruise lines are helping

Royal Caribbean has a private island off the coast of Haiti and will continue to call on the port as it brings much needed revenue to the locals.
It's a start!
Another thought besides the cruise ships (not a bad idea, either): the day before the earthquake, I saw a brief squib on the news about FEMA trying to auction off its thousands of trailers left over from Katrina; they're parked all together someplace in Alabama. What if the trailers were transported to Haiti? It's a drop in the bucket compared to what's needed, but then, what isn't?
You are a genius! I think that's great!
Traveling as a family can be challenging, especially if you have smaller children. Many cruise ships are now offering coordinated programs just for younger travelers so parents can have some time to relax.
cruise and stay caribbean
I am pretty sure this was tried out during the Katrina catastrophe.
One ship would be a drop in the bucket though really.
brilliant idea. if one ship is not enough send two or three. Send your idea to the big shipping lines
This is a wonderful idea...
