More Side Effects

The Vampire giveaway was going to end today at midnight,
but I've decided to extend it to Friday,
so you can get more entries.
One comment a day, every day, for more entries.
Post about the giveaway on your blog for three extra entries.

A while back I wrote a post about the side effects of football.
I still have a hard time looking at those photos.

Well, I'm here today to show you yet more side effects.

I should have know, after reading Shannon's post about her daughter and Valarie's post about her son, that these things happen in 3's.

It took me a week to clue in to our medical issue.
Girls, I think we all three win Mother of the Year Awards.

It was our turn.

Here we are in the orthopedic waiting room, where they have a chess board.
The waiting room was packed with kids and adults,
but no one was playing, so Donny and I did.

I checkmated him fairly quickly,
and then our second game was cut short.

And we headed back to an exam room to have the doctor look at our x-rays.

The Doctor identified the small fracture on his pinky immediately, and told us Donny needed a cast.

DARNIT.

That's the splint the emergency center had given us.

And now on to the cast making...

He chose bright green.

And he has to wear it for six weeks.

But, the kicker is, get this...he can still play football!!

Is that nutty or what?!!

Donny only has one or two games left.

OH NO!!! Bummer on the cast, but hey, atleast it's a holiday color! And Donny gets to finish out the football season so he has to be happy about that!

That's a pretty neat chess board. Our set is one of those roll up mats and a bag so my son could take it places we went. Hubs bro is an expert and does all those tournaments so he'd sent it to us. It's an amazing game. I get so far and then freak out because my brain hurts from trying to figure out moves.

That is crazy. Really he can still play. Hey taking kids our=t with the cast may work to his advantage. Ya know that's how my Jacob got the shngles cause some kid with a cast thought it would be funny to trip him with it while playing Touch football. He reached out and touched him alright. :-)

Momma Trish said...

That is nutty! How can he still play football with a cast on his right hand? He can't possibly catch like that, can he? Poor boy!

Good choice Donny. I love green.

I guess at least it is at the end of the season. I'm sure you will worry when he head out on the field all wrapped up!

Lauren W said...

Oh dear... at least he doesn't seem to bothered by it :)
I do think that it's pretty funny that he's still allowed to play. I remember when I broke my pinky, I still had to practice piano everyday, so I guess football is fine too ;)

Katie said...

He must be a lineman. We knew a guy on the Offensive Line who played the entire season with a cast on each thumb. Football is rough! He looks pretty proud of his cast though :)

Keys to the Magic Travel said...

So are you going to let him play football? Maybe the cast can be used as a weapon :-)

The only bone I ever broke was in elementary school during PE. We were playing with this huge ball - with the idea that you wouldn't let it hit the ground. I hit it and broke my finger. I was quite popular then. With a splint on my middle finger :-)

lynette355 said...

Let him play? Are they nuts?
Ok mom, step up and tell us how good are you. Protective and says no way or supportive and says go for it dear. Ohhhhh, stuck between a rock and a hard place I would think.

TerriRainer said...

Oh dear...threes you say? I am on the way (waiting on oldest daughter to finish primping) to Orthopedic Dr this morning! Unfortunately, it's nothing as simple as a broken bone (never thought I'd be wishing for THAT).

Daughter is on the high school Pom squad (dance), and has screwed hjer knee up (over two months ago). Still not getting better.

Who knew dance would be so dangerous????

:) Terri

PS. Better watch your son, casts make a GREAT weapon to bat people (brothers) on the head...oldest daughter has had three (she breaks easy...pain in my rear).

Yes, y'all are mothers of the year. There was never any doubt on my part.

Love his green cast...ask him if I can wrap a red bow around it next month. He'll be all festive.

Bummer! Cool cast though, heh. I'll bet he's already had it signed by, oh, everyone ;). I'm glad he gets to keep playing, even if that is crazy, heh.

Avery Tales said...

That is definitely a green cast! I'm sorry the poor guys is injured, but glad to know he can still romp around on the field! Does the cast at least match his team colors???

KimmyJ said...

Poor guy - hope he is on the mend.

Dern it, I posted about contests this morning and I KNEW I was living someone out. Maybe I can edit the post to include you.

KimmyJ said...

OK - Rhea - I included your giveaway in today's post!

Poor guy!

Yeah on Cowboy's team there was a kiddo that had a broken wrist. They cast that thing up and he was good to go.

Check with your coach and local football league. I know in ours, he had to wear padding around it (certain thickness) and he also had to have a doc's note saying he could play, verbal was not enough.

Love the green! Hopefully it'll heal well and he will never know it was broken.

Jen said...

so your telling me that he can play with a broken finger, what is he suppose to do, whack people on the head with his cast?

BTW, I am sorry that he got hurt but I do love the color. They didn't have colors like that when I broke my arm

scargosun said...

Aw, that sucks about the cast. I like the color though.

Anonymous said...

That stinks about the cast but I love the color! And it is so crazy what kind of injuries players can play with these days!

Putting the FUN in DysFUNctional said...

Ouch! He doesn't look like he's in terrible pain, though. lol

Cristin said...

Love the funky green cast! I can't believe he's still going to play football!!

steenky bee said...

Oh dear! I hope he's okay. He seems like a tough little man!

Unknown said...

that's funy that he got a bright colored cast... but smart, too! when my mom broke her ankle she wanted a bright color so that people WOULD see it and NOT knock in to it! see.. you're boy's brilliant ;)

and yes, still entering in the contest... I have Edward Fever... SOOO exciting!!!

Susie said...

Oh the poor thing!! I can't believe that he can still play!!!

Kally said...

That is nuts that he can still play football with a cast! I hope he enjoys his last couple games. :)

OHmommy said...

Poor Donny. Tell him he picked out a cool color and he is lucky it isn't his middle finger. ;)

Twisted Fencepost said...

Poor Donny!
I can't believe he'd even want to play with that cast on.
Oh, well. I feel for ya, Mom!

Momo Fali said...

The only sense of relief I had when we found out about my son's heart defects is that the doctor said he could never play oontact sports.

Claremont First Ward said...

OK, that's totally nutty. I can't believe he can play with that on. He looks like a trooper though!

Cathy said...

Really? I didn't think they would let him play or more yet the team wouldn't let him play. Kids, they are gonna kill us. On a good note..at least he won't brake his whole hand or arm.. Sorry, I was trying to help but Ya know what I'm saying. Tell him good luck and that's it for the year.. That's what I tell mine and well it doesn't work but it makes me feel like I tried.

cheatymoon said...

Wow - poor guy - but he seems like he's in good spirits. What a trooper. Funny about the football, tho my kid tested for his brown belt in karate w/ a cast on his fractured wrist.

Good luck keeping the cast dry!

Now you see if was a Footie Pro' back in England earning 20,000 quid a week, he'd get to do nothing for 6 weeks but still get paid!

Adore the green :-)

YIKES ABOUT THE CAST! But hey....he got my favorite color;) LOL

Monogramchick said...

oh my goodness, poor Donny! Look at the funny way they casted his finger...and i love the green! is it full of sigs yet?

Keeper of the Skies Wife said...

That sucks! That is the craziest way they casted it. Donny picked out a great color for the cast! :)

I hurt my pinky once and went to see an NFL doctor. He injected me with steroids and my pinky became so strong I became a cab driver.

Britt said...

Is it bad that I would totally have tried to slip the Doc a $20 to say that he couldn't play?

That cast does look really cool, though. And he seems to be taking it in stride .. these things seem to be hardest on the mama. How many more months till football is over, Rhea?

Anonymous said...

Cast as weapon could be fun for him:-) When nephew Graham had a cast on his foot he would kick Cristin and laugh his tiny butt off, funny for me, not so much for her...those buggers are hard!

Nanny Goats In Panties said...

Well of COURSE he can still play football. He can still wiggle 8 fingers and ALL his toes, right????

Anonymous said...

He can still play football? Really?! I'm sorry about the cast--yikes!

Shannon said...

Well, I've got you both beat... it took me TWO WEEKS to get my kid to the doctor.

Sheesh.

We went to the ortho today... her cast is pink, of course. The doctor asked what color she wanted... purple, pink, red, blue, brown...

"Brown?!??!?" I said... "who would want a brown cast?

Jane In The Jungle said...

My 12 yr old fell in the backyard last summer and cut the front of his shin open, got 6 stitches, was told he could play in his baseball game that night as long as he didn't hind-catch or slide! So he did, after the numbing medicine wore off that night, that boy was in some serious pain, well duh!!!

Anonymous said...

How the heck can he play football??

I once broke my pinky but didn't know it because I simultaneously broke it and knocked it back into place incorrectly all in 1 fail swoop. Wish I would of gone to the dr immediately so they could've broken it and reset it correctly. But I didn't. And now it's permanently jacked.

Captain Dumbass said...

He can still play? That kid is ready for hockey.

Valarie Lea said...

Oh my gosh I am so far behind on reading things!!!! Oh bless Donnies heart! Isn't it crazy how they will let them play football in a cast? Love the green, looks quite familiar!!! Oh and welcome to the club! :)

Mama Dawg said...

Nutty, absolutely nutty!

Debbie said...

He is going to play chess right??? Not football...certainly not football??? And I am cracking up that you whipped out the camera in the doc office...I can see it now "Excuse me Doc, can you move out of the way?" I am a popular Mommy Blogger and need some material for my next post...and really this is too good to pass up. So move out of the pic please."

Justine said...

Aw, poor handsome kid! But how can he play football like that? Is he going to catch and throw the ball with his feet?
Gimme those vampire books dammit!

Justine :o )

Jennifer said...

VERY cool cast color!! sucks that he needs a cast at all though. :( bummer.

and I cannot believe that they are still allowing him to play football with a fractured/broken finger!! wow!!

but at least he will get to finish up the last few games... after playing all season that is a good thing.. he has worked for it and earned it... i just hope he doesn't hurt his finger more, OR anything else for that matter.

hope he is healing fast and feeling good!!
