Commodication

Earlier this month, Texas Homeboy and I celebrated our 12th anniversary. I haven't been into the sentimental cards much lately...so I got him this one. It's a Hallmark card.

That's a coffee stain on the bottom right-hand corner because Texas Homeboy kept it next to his coffee machine for the next week or two. I'd like to think because he loved it so much, but he probably just didn't know what to do with it. I know just what to do with it! Blog.

Here's what the inside said (I've painted out my inked ramblings of love):

Now, this might be a touchy subject for some, but do you let your spouse see you on the toilet?

Texas Homeboy and I have never been shy about this sort of thing. We don't intrude on each other's privacy, but we'll carry on conversations or be in the bathroom together...

I thought everyone was like this until a friend told me she never allowed her husband in the bathroom while she...um...took care of things. Built a log cabin. Took the kids to the lake. You know. Went #2. What do you call it?

I was shocked. I have no such privacy in my home. Even the dog walks in and expects a pat on her head if I'm in there doing my business. The kids come talk, I shoo them out. You know.

So, my question for you is, do you let your loved one see you in the bathroom? Should that kind of thing be kept more private in order to keep the magic alive? Or does this bring us closer?

I love you for making me laugh at 6:30 in the morning and on a Wednesday as I am usually in a bad mood by now. LOVE the post. I think more people should keep it real like you try to do. We too share EVERY room in the house and carry on conversations while doing our business...we call it "dropping friends off at the pond"!!!!!

The teenager thought her and a boyfriend were going to be together forever..EVER.. I tried to tell her until he sees ya pee then nothing is set in stone.. and then even that. But I told her not to get her hopes up.. Not that he should see her pee for another like 15 years in my book but ya know. Love the card..

My husband usually steers clear, I'm happy to say, but my kids and the cats? Whole 'nother story. Unless I'm home alone, I'm usually talking to someone while poopin'. Drives me insane though!

We have an open door policy on the bathroom no matter what is going on... Dottie will toddle in, open the drawer, grab a diaper and hand it to me, telling me, "poop"!!!

At first I was 'loo' shy but not for a long time now, so we wander in and out. However we do respect each others #2 privacy, but the hubster loves to discuss the quality in Dr Oz terms afterwards!

Nope, can't do it. Have to have my privacy whilst doing my business. Plus, I can take a book in there and read in peace if no one's allowed to come in! Kids have learned it takes mommy a LONG TIME to use the potty.

Ya wanna hear the official Litton Family Slogan O' Marriage?

You're not really married if you don't pee, poop, or toot in front of each other.

End of story.

And you rock for posting about this. You're my kind of people.

Ummm...we just don't do it. We'll talk through the door, but we don't leave the door open. Just been one of those things.

There's absolutely nothing remotely close to privacy in my house. The kids, my husband just barge in no matter what I'm doing in there. Heck, the girls even open the shower door on me to tell me the most minute things.

But yes, LushMan and I both visit each other while the other is on the crapper if needed. :)

My children, like to "ignore" me until one of two things happen. I get on the phone, or go to the bathroom. Then they have to talk to me and its a matter of live and death.

Personally, I don't care. I have given birth and that pretty much strips you of all modesty. Also when if I wanted privacy in the bathroom, the kids would not alow it.
Jeff on the hand is one for total privacy in the bathroom. I have to close my eyes if I need to give him something while he is in there.

My husband always wants me to close the door when I pee, but there is a partial wall by the toilet so it's not like he can see anything. I do close the door when I'm going #2 though.

When I was married, we didn't care. Hey, everybody does it. However, he used to make me come in and look at it if it was a funny shape. I kinda drew the line at that.

Now, well, it hasn't changed. Just no husband.

It's an open door at our house. Mostly cause if the door was shut and the cats needed to go, well, their litter box is in the bathroom as well.

The thing that threw me for a loop is FRIENDS who don't care. FRIENDS who go in front of you.

That's a little weird.

Actually, we do give each other privacy in the bathroom. Oddly, my mother-in-law is one who will just go even if I'm in their combing my hair etc. Freaked me out a little at first. Now, my 8 year old daughter CANNOT go to a public bathroom without me even if it's a teeny, skinny spot that I have to practically be double-jointed to twist into it after her.

Rhea,

I love my job, I never want to be there but I do love it. I think the real calls, bad accidents, fires, other are stessful but I think it's a good stress. It's the everyday, same person, same problem, that gets me. You just can't help them. If 70 percent of my calls were actual calls for help I wouldn't get so burnt out.. but then the dispatch centers that have all the bad calls everyday, all day say it's stressful too.

Hours will depend on the center. Some work 5 days 2 off others work 4 12 hr shifts 3 days off. I used to cover every shift in a month and that was hard, you didn't know if your were supposed to up or sleeping or what. Then I worked 4-12, good work, all the action but terrible for family I think. Then I got days, normal life but worked every weekend, and I am not a morning person. I found midnights to be my thing, I sleep from 8 til whenever, no alarms.. the kids are in school. I get up and have all evening with them.

You should try it, see what shifts they are offering and see. I really do enjoy it. I have been there 17 years and still love it, but I am also ready for retirement... okay, in about 13 years but who's counting.

Hmmm. Interesting topic. I fight desperately for privacy in the bathroom, but I think I'm kidding myself. I'm the only female in the house, so I think I should get some rights.

The standing rule is that you don't bother someone when they are in the bathroom or shower unless you are bleeding, someone else is bleeding, or there is someone important on the phone. Doesn't always work that way though.

My husband on the other hand, cannot bear for me to even see him pee. After 25 years of marriage, I think that's a little prissy, but I usually try to go along with that. As for the "other" business, I would as soon be on the other side of the country if that were possible!

I think I am the minority here and while I DO NOT judge anyone else because I have been in open door policy relationships before, my husband and I do like our privacy. It's actually him who took the lead on this and will never go to the bathroom #1 or 2 in front of me so I reciprocate. I do believe it keeps the magic alive depending on the people. For us, it works. We were already letting daily life get in the way of our intimacy at one point. I don't think seeing me poop was going to help that. I think giving each other privacy keeps you more physically attracted. And get this: I like the fact that I have never heard my husband make a toot sound. Nope, seriously. OK, enough info there. Bottom line is to each his own.

Privacy in the bathroom. Always. It's often the only few minutes I spend alone. Ever.

HAIL to tha NO!

I can't even handle him trying to talk to me through the door when I'm "busy".

We share the bathroom, but I jet when he has to poop. Yes I know "Everybody has to poop" but I don't care to be in there. Other than THAT issue...he can stand there while I pee and visa versa because we all live busy lives and I don't want to miss one conversation with my boyfriend. Except the poop'n part!!!

Good topic!

Happy Wednesday

Absolutely not. There are no words for it. It's unmentionable. Taboo. I don't even like for him to be on the other side of the door at the sink when I am in there. I'll seek out another area of the house if I have to go and I know he'll need to come in there to brush his teeth or whatever.

WHY? I have no idea. But I like my toilet privacy.

My children on the other hand...they don't understand the concept of a closed door. And the kittens hate it. They scratch and meow on the other side. And put their paws under the door.

I just keep telling all of them to leave me alone. And invent reasons to go in there and lock the door...

No freaking way!!

I love that you posted about this. The doors stay open in our house unless, of course, there's company. I'm not sure how much longer my daughter should be seeing my husband walk around in the nude, though. Starting to get a little worried about that one.

Ashley said...

#1 - yes, #2 - no

Just, no thanks, I don't really want to be there with him doing his 'business' anyways. I can have a much better conversation when I can breath. I do like it when he warns me not to go in the bathroom for a while though. So sweet right? TMI?

The last graphic is so funny that I think I just snorted. Ya know, I wish I could keep them out. It's no use though.

I do however make it a point to stay clear of that room if anybody else has spent more than a minute in there. Never and I mean NEVER be the third person in there in the morning!!!!!

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHA What a fab question!!!

Of COURSE me and and Hubby let eachother see ourselves on the dunny!

We have some of our best conversations on the dunny! *GiGGLeS*

That's how I know Hubby sits down to pee Heeeeheeeeeee! But I don't want to be near him when he's doing poos! The smell is a bit of a turn off!

But I like Hubby to keep me company while I'm doing wees! Even the cats come in for a look!

It's like our 'family time!'

*GiGGLeS* Great post!! xx

Great question. NEVER! We've been married 10 years on Friday. Gotta keep some things private. Great question-I love reading the comments.

That IS a great question. My parents are total public poopers and I'm utterly traumatized. They don't do it around ME or anything, but I know for a fact they do it around each other.

I on the other hand refuse to poo with witnesses. My husband keeps his poo to himself, as well. Though, I will admit, I probably pooed in the delivery room when I was struggling to give birth ... so I guess it's not totally private, right?

*sigh*

LOVE the card... I would totally give that one to my hubby!

We do carry on conversations through the door.. but usually don't just barge in on each other. The kids and the dog? They don't care what you're doing in there, they are coming in! If I don't manage to latch the door behind me, the dog will push open the door and come in. If I do manage to get the door shut, she will lay right outside the door with her paws sticking underneath it.

The first time I farted in hubby's presence? On our honeymoon! HA HA HA! Yep, the three years prior to getting married... I would leave the room (OMGawd, I cannot believe I am telling you this!), do my "poot" and come back!

Traci said...

Awesome card!! When first married - it was definitely closed door policy in the bathroom, but after almost 3 years it's not. We do warn each other if #2. Don't want to be anywhere near the room when kids are dropped off at the pool!!

Just coming over to check your blog from Lulaville and I really got a laugh when I got here! Great post! We're a little different here, especially once the kids are older. Our youngest is 15, so yeah, they aren't in our bathroom. Hubby & I are pretty open, but not for #2 - we get privacy then!!

No bathroom togetherness for us. Unless one of us is in the shower and you just can't wait 5 minutes.

Yeah, it doesn't really matter. Although after they come in the room , they tend to leave QUICKLY, if you know what I mean.....

We have several names for it....
Dropping the kiddies off at the pool...
Taking the browns to the super bowl.
Hatching a litter of mud puppies...

Yeah, we are a family that really relishes our poots and laughs a lot about it.

It's a natural function man, everybody has to do it, may as well laugh about it.

Funny card.

I don't mind if hubby comes in while I'm on the toilet, but for some strange reason do not like it if I'm in the shower. LOL
I bust in on him no matter what he's doing in there and sometimes he say he wants a little privacy but it depends on what he's doing. LOL If it's #2 then I know he's just shooing me away because of the sewage smell wafting thru the room. Now when he's in the shower, I will stand nearby and chat away with him and he has no problem.
The kids do not bust in on us anymore, they are older and we give them total privacy too, but the dogs, they have a way of just pushing the door open on everyone. LOL

Ok, I'm still laughing at the title on this one. Hilarious! Hubby & I are like you guys. The bathroom door is pretty much revolving around here, so we don't have privacy issues. However, my good friend and her hubby have a SERIOUS bathroom privacy rule. I guess it's all in what your comfort level is and how long you've been together. Hubby & I celebrated 14 years living together this month. After a while, you learn to let some things go. LOL!

You mean bathrooms have doors?
There's no privacy in my home, from kids, dogs, or husbands.
We even comment on each others' smells or lengths of time on the pooper.
Love the card, Happy Anniversary a little late!

In our house, when the door is closed, someone better be bleeding or burning for me to open the door. I will pass gas in front of everyone but nothing else. Case and door closed:-) Hee, hee, hee.

Wait, there's a woman who actually gets privacy in the bathroom? I've never heard of that before. Is there a lock on that door?

Thanks for submitting your post!
