Elephant Seals

Last March, I went to California with my mom and my boys.

We visited my sister in Palo Alto,
Rode a street car, crossed the Golden State Bridge and visited Alcatraz in San Francisco.
And then we spent the rest of the trip renting a house in Pebble Beach,
and exploring Carmel, Big Sur and the rest of the Monterey Bay area.
The boys went tide pooling for the first time.

It was an amazing trip, and on the last day of the trip,
we hiked in the pouring, freezing rain at Año Nuevo State Reserve
to see a colony of elephant seals.

The elephant seals spend most of their lives at sea,
and come ashore only to molt, give birth, and mate.

The male elephant seals can be up to sixteen feet long and weigh up to 2 1/2 tons!
They have great big snouts, as you can see.

They were amazing.
They were HUGE.
They made the most amazing noises.

This is my first time to participate in Camera Critters in a long time!

C is for Cozy...and Cat.

Sometimes I think about what animal I'd like to be if I had to come back as an animal in my next life.
Everyone ponders this, right?  Right?!

Initially I was thinking I'd be a dog, because they seem to have so much fun and interact so well with humans.  But, then, I thought, cats really seem to have a more luxurious existence.  They come around when they feel like interacting, but otherwise they are aloof and they sleep a lot...and do whatever the hell they want.

It's a tough decision.

This is my mom's cat pictured above.  Kachi.  King Kachi.
I've mentioned him before (and how he's a Mexican Lucha Libre wrestler in disguise!)

He's totally pampered...but definitely let's us know if he can see the bottom of his food bowl.

What animal would you choose to be if you had to?

A dolphin to swim the oceans free?
A pampered cat?
An eagle to fly the sky?

Annie & her ball

I haven't joined the Camera Critters meme in a while!

But, here's my Annie...happily tired after playing fetch at the baseball fields
while my younger son has baseball practice.

Watering Hole

I had to drive down this one country road and find my friends the cows again recently.

I think I need to see animals ever so often, because I grew up on a farm seeing them daily.

and I miss that kind of contact.

Hi, guys!!

I think they remember me!!

Or they're just friendly.

Or maybe it's because I'm just standing near their water and they're thirsty.

Oh, a mama and her baby!!  They want to come see me.
They sense I'm a mother...and a lover of animals...

...or they're thirsty too.

Errands with Annie

Annie ran errands with me last weekend.

We went to the bank drive-thru, where they sent her a treat.

Then we went to the Walgreens drive-thru, where they also sent her a treat.

And then we went to Starbucks, where they gave her a "puppy latte."

Annie LOVES running errands with me.

Silly Pet Saturday

I haven't participated in Camera Critters in a while,
so here's a photo of a critter who lives in my sister's house.

Lollipop the Chihuahua.

She's tiny, and she fits in a baby doll carriage perfectly.

She hopped up in there all by herself.

Doggy Latte

I don't drink coffee, but I love Starbucks.
I love their philisophy and how they give back to the community.
And I drink their teas.
I have no shame!

Well, whenever I go through their drive-thru with my sweet Annie,
the baristas want to give her a "doggy latte."

They told me a story about one customer who comes through the drive-thru with his dog every day,
and his dog has learned how to put down the automatic window all by himself because he knows he's gonna get a doggy latte.

The addiction of Starbucks!

Here's some photos of Annie enjoying her doggy latte:

It's just whip cream in a cup, I think.

She enjoyed that!!

Cows kind of look like Aliens

I was driving down a country road today
and had to pull over when I spotted a large group of cows.

No one suspects cows of anything.
They're so big and sweet and innocent.

They could be plotting terrorism for all I know.

One of them decided to come check me out...

Look at this bizarre hump on it's back.
What's its purpose?

I think I know...

And look at these ears!

Why do cows need such large ears?

Radar detection?
flying capability?

And then I saw the tongue.

It was the tongue that sealed the deal.

Anything with a tongue like that...has to be alien!!

I'm on to you, ALIENS!

I'm keeping an eye on them.

How is a 90 lb dog intimidated by a 12 lb cat?

When the boys and I first moved in with my mom and step-dad,

our sweet Annie was terrified of Kachi the cat.

Eventually, the two made peace and ignored each other.

However, take a look at this photo.
Anything wrong with this picture?

Let's zoom in closer for a better look.

Hi, Annie!

Who's that sleeping in your bed?!

Bad Kitty!!

But, Annie's so scared of the cat  or totally wimpy polite, she won't make the kitty move.

It's Remy to the rescue!

He dumps the kitty out of the bed.

Kachi runs off and gives us his back, clearly irritated his nap has been interrupted so rudely.

And, there's a happy ending.

Annie is back in her bed once again!

They are getting along much better...but I think the kitty still wears the pants around here.
