Dive-Bombing Crickets

Donny's in 7th grade band, and he plays the trombone.

(Don't worry, I'm getting to the crickets)

Last weekend he got to play with the high school band at a football game.

It was pretty exciting.
And he had a blast...

except for the dive-bombing crickets.

WHAT?!

I know, I had to hear that twice too.
Apparently there are flying crickets all over the stands...
and they dive-bomb into the people and stands.

So, while Donny was playing his trombone,
he would feel things landing on him.

Kind of sounds like something out of a nightmare to me.

He said a lot of them just plummeted to their death in the stands.

It was quite an evening.

And, then, there was the whole incident where he fell and broke the trombone...
but we won't go into that!!

Do you have any insect horror stories?!!

When I was in high school, the seniors one year let loose 100,000 crickets in the school. One. Hundred. Thousand. Crickets. I remember walking to class and they are smooshed in the hallways. Or some would have lived and are hopping through class. And even a month later, you can hear them chirrping. Oy...

My horror story is about a spider. A very large, hairy, tarantula like spider (I didn't stick around long enough to see if it was really a tarantula).
We were in Costa Rica at a hotel and I spotted a hammock. I love(d) hammocks and was so supper dupper excited to get to lay on one so big. I had just gotten comfy when I felt something land on my shoulder.
I looked and found myself staring at the biggest freakin' spider I had ever seen. I might have screamed.
If you have never tried to swipe off a spider while also trying to get out of a hammock, it's not easy. I did manage a swipe that knocked the sucker off of me. It landed near my shoes, but I didn't care about my shoes. I struggled out of the hammock and sprinted away. My husband was oblivious to all of this, but some nice people passing by retrieved my shoes.
Since then, I can't look at a hammock without shivering with recollection of that spider.

Okay, ew. I absolutely hate crickets. Probably 'cause when you step on them they pop. Ewwwwwwwww.

And excuse me, but I want the story of how he broke the trombone! And how did he get the privelige of playing with the HS'ers?

My horror story is actually quite similar: Kamikaze Krickets all over the stands as I watched my husband play softball. I've lived a dozen or so different places and hadn't seen anything like it until we moved to central Texas.

You mean like the time the grasshopper climbed up my pants leg, and I had to pull my pants down in front of God and everybody to get it out?
Yeah, I have those kinds of stories.

That sounds like it could be a bit distracting to the band members. Wow. They must be troopers!
